He worked in a variety of scientific roles in the NHS and University sectors before spending two years helping to plan a new hospital project and three years as an NHS general manager. He is currently Head of Medical Physics at Guy\u2019s and St Thomas\u2019 hospitals, responsible for physicists and engineers who support and check a wide variety of equipment and systems, ranging from X-ray machines to blood pressure meters; who plan and deliver cancer treatments; and who develop new equipment. He is Chairman of the Federation for Healthcare Science, a national body that represents healthcare scientist professions.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pippa Hodgson<br>Programme Manager for the Modernising Healthcare Science Careers Programme, Skills for Health\u00a0<br>Following a clinical career as a physiotherapist in stroke rehabilitation, Pippa moved into human resources specialising in the areas of management &amp; organisational development and education &amp; training. She worked on projects nationally and locally before leading on a partnership project with two teaching hospitals as an alternative to merger. Her role prior to joining Skills for Health was as the Healthcare Science and Allied Health Professional lead at Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Strategic Health Authority where she was also the lead for Diagnostic Modernisation. Having not even stepped in a boat until she went to Liverpool University at the age of 18, she then kept rowing on the back burner for many years while she pursued an academic career. Having achieved a PhD in Genetic Engineering from Cambridge University in 1997, at the age of 26 she finally moved to London to attempt National selection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three years later, Alison achieved a last minute qualification for the Sydney Olympics and finished 10th in the single sculls event. It was not until then, at the age of 29, that an Olympic medal seemed even a possibility. \u201cBy the Monday of the Sydney Games I had decided I wanted to row for just four more years, I wanted to go to Athens and I wanted to come back with a medal\u201d. The story of the next four years is one of dedication, teamwork and personal leadership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four years later, in the Quad sculls in Athens, Alison achieved her ambition to bring home an Olympic medal; she knows what it is to work towards and achieve a dream.
